Chapter 10 : Twistful Fate

 

“Moshi moshi. Azumi desu” he said, though he recognized the number – Kanagaoka Hospital.

 

“Azumi!” more than familiar voice heard in super exciting tone.

 

“Ah, Rin. Doushita?” probably he asked the reason for her to be such excited, rather than to ask why she called him.

 

“Doushita tte? Hurry up please… shigoto yo!”

 

“Shigoto tte?” as he didn’t catch what she meant, but her tone made him imagining she’s jumping up and down while talking to him.

 

“A~re~? Haven’t Mrs. Hoshi told you? Your suspension has been cancelled!”

 

“Ha?” he almost got his cell phone off from his grip.

 

No wonder you sound so excited. I guess you bored these 3 days without me… and no one to hear your nags after Mrs. Hoshi nagged at you!? Or maybe… you missed my tease?

“Okaeri!” she lingers her smile as she dipped both of her hands in her empty uniform’s pockets. Azumi is carrying some new bed sheets in his hand, while there’s few piece of papers he placed on top of them.

 

“Tadaima…” he paused as he noticed her rare attitude.

 

“Ohh my. I wonder why I’m the one feeling my cheeks burning hot now” he greeted her with a tease.

 

“Azumi~~~!!” a light punch landed on his arm and he dropped the things in his hold.

 

“A~~~ark! See, what have you done” as the two bend into their knees to pick them up.

 

“You’re the one who asked me to bring this and now? Ahhh… I thought you’re the one to be teased today, but it seems to be opposite”

 

“Why would I tease you? It’s not April first or some kind of” before they both burst into laughter.

 

“Uhm, then… was it a punishment… of missing someone, maybe?” he said while laughter remaining in his words.

 

“Azumi!”

 

“Oh wait. I think I need to look for Mrs. Hoshi…” as he gazed at the watch on his left wrist.

 

“You don’t have to… she’s here”

 

“Yes indeed, Rin-san. Azumi-san, follow me then” commanded Mrs. Hoshi.

Funny game! I was called back to help on her rehabilitation? Out of hundreds medical assistant in this hospital, why me? One more mistake and I’ll be fired! I don’t think it’s funny though! Is that what they really want, actually?

 

“Hisashiburi” she voiced as he appeared in front of her with Dr. Fukada standing beside him. He uttered no words, but just giving a light bow. Perhaps he’s been too cautious while Fukada is there – to ensure same history won’t be repeated.

 

He’s required to accompany Kikuchi while she’ having her rehabilitation. She’ll be fully observed by Dr. Fukada on certain days, while he is responsible for the rest. And for the first day, Inspector Kikuchi’s rehabilitation is done with Dr. Fukada’s presence.

 

As the rehabilitation’s over, Azumi is asked to leave first. He didn’t mean to eavesdropping, but he overheard some of their conversations while he is just few meters away.

 

“Emi, don’t hesitate to tell me if he did something wrong to you later, k?” as he bent his knees and placed his hand on the wheelchair’s armrest. He probably wanted to place it on hers, but somehow she snatched it faster.

 

“Uhm, wakatta yo. But he didn’t. I’m sure he wouldn’t” she threw her sight away from him, perhaps to ask him leaving her alone now.

 

“Don’t be so tender to that boy. He is just a medical assistant! And I am responsible if something happened to you…” he paused as Azumi paused his breathing.

 

“Because I’ve promised to take care of your whole life to your Mom and Dad…”

 

Azumi left the place as soon as Fukada ends his sentence. He’s not sure why he left, but one thing for sure – he can’t bear to hear anything more than that.

 

So that, what Yumie told me on that morning is true. She is engaged… no just engaged, she’s fiancée to Dr. Fukada. What is fate trying to tell me? Do I deserve to know this all?

“A-zu-mi!” she called while waving her hand right in front of his face.

 

“Ahhh~ Rin… gomen” he replied weakly, snapping out of his thoughts on what he has overheard while ago.

 

“Doushita? Are you sad because you have to see me again?” she sounds teasing, but in real she’s trying to dig it out. She knew he’s hiding something from her.

 

“Nani itteru no~”

 

“Ummmmm… nan ka hen” she pouted.

 

“Ahah~  you’re that curious to know? Ok, but please stop giving me that duck-mouth” he still has a space to joke and as the consequence of that, a pinch landed on his stomach.

 

“You know what, it’s Kikuchi who brought you back. I heard she asked the Director herself to cancel your suspension. I should thank her then”

 

“Ha? Does she want me to be fired? Or…” he stopped. He’s confused.

 

“What do you mean to be fired?” she’s confused too.

 

“I… don’t know. But I have a bad feeling over this. Yes indeed she brought me back, but Fukada the one who asked the Director to let me in charge of her rehabilitation. While he’s the one who caused my suspension, and now he wants me to take care of his fiancée? How does it sound to you?” finally he blurted them out.

 

“Wait… Kikuchi is… Fukada’s fiancée???” and Rin is stunned towards the fact she just knew.
